If you are a BT Broadband customer and you are getting a 533 error when sending emails from your own domain, then you need to ‘verify’ your account with BT.
Below is a helpsheet, the content of which has been copied from the BT Yahoo help centre. Use this to resolve the error. If you need help following these instructions, please call BT Broadband support.
Error (533) when sending emails – BT Broadband customers only
I got this 533 error message but I do not have BT broadband. I am with Madasafish.com.
I do have bt.yahoo email (talk21.com), which could be the source of the problem. The error message states:
Urgent – emails you send from non–BT Yahoo! Mail addresses via our SMTP servers may be blocked
Dear Customer,
You’ve received an Error 553 message because we’ve upgraded your BT Yahoo! Mail security to help prevent identity fraud and spam.
These enhancements will help protect you from ’spoofing’ – when people use alternate addresses to disguise an email’s real sender, possibly to commit fraud.
Making the improvements work
For the security improvements to work, we need you to take a few minutes now to verify each of the alternate email addresses you use in BT Yahoo! Mail. This will confirm that these email addresses are genuine.
Please verify addresses now to avoid any further blocking of your outgoing emails.
Simply follow the step-by-step instructions at http://www.btyahoo.com/verify. You won’t be asked for any personal information, but you’ll need to log in to your account to make the changes. Your BT Yahoo! Mail address is
david.kaufman@talk21.com
If you can’t remember your password, please use our
automated password re-set tool
We’re committed to helping you get the most from your award-winning BT Yahoo! Mail. The changes we’ve made will help reduce spam on the network and improve your enjoyment of the service. We hope this doesn’t cause any inconvenience and appreciate your co-operation.
Kind regards,
BT Total Broadband team

Any ideas why I am getting this message – is it a scam message?

Hi David
Thanks for your message. I don’t think this is a SCAM email, I think it is genuinely from BT Yahoo. I think, therefore, you should follow the instructions they’ve given you. You will then be able to send emails using BT’s SMTP server.
If there is even an inkling of suspicion about an email, then do not click on the link from within the email – instead type it in directly in your Browser address bar. And even better, visit the BT Yahoo website as you normally do and search for that particular set of instructions for yourself.
And as a final resort you can phone them to register your Talk21 email address. The trouble is that most of my clients don’t like phoning BT (ironic huh?!) as they have to sit in call centre queues and have difficulty explaining their request when they get through to the operator.
Good luck, and let us know if this solves your problem sending emails.
Regards,
Cat Young
