Regularly monitor the search phrases your website visitors use to find you

You need to know what phrases people are typing into the search engines and then visiting your website.  This will help you identify what products, services, information or areas of expertise you are getting most interest in.  Also, you get to find out how your CUSTOMERS are thinking rather than how YOU think they are thinking!

It seems common sense to assume that  these phrases are customarily used  by people who have the same interests and concerns as your site visitors and therefore as you. Thus you will be building up a rapport with both your present clients and possible future ones. In this way you can reinforce your status and enhance your credibility. And consequently increase your business!

“This is all very well, but I don’t have the time nor the facilities for such research.” Several people have made similar remarks to me but using Google Analytics (or other statistics software) you can find this information out within a couple of clicks of your mouse.

The access the report in Google Analytics:

  1. From your Dashboard, choose on ‘Traffic Sources’ on the left hand menu
  2. Click on ‘Keywords’.

Your report will look something like this:

If you don’t already have Google Analytics, you can sign up here www.google.co.uk/analytics

Once you have identified  the phrases that people are using to find your site use them in all your marketing, and in your website content. These search phrases can be very valuable in building your brand identity and your client base.

If you have used Google Analytics or any other statistics software I would be very interested to hear from you – post your comments here and share your insights!

Warm regards,
Cat Young
